NMDC-CMDC Limited (NCL) has achieved a major mining breakthrough by recovering five natural diamonds from the Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, a high-stakes project driven by the specialized exploration expertise of United Exploration India Private Limited (UEIPL). This successful discovery transitions a geological hypothesis into a tangible reality, setting the stage for India to potentially unlock a massive new domestic diamond-bearing belt.
Unearthing Sparkle in Mahasamund:
The exploration project reached a milestone when the processing of 200 tonnes of bulk sample material yielded five natural diamonds weighing a total of 1.22 carats. The discovery, officially confirmed by NCL—a joint venture between the central government enterprise NMDC Limited (51% stake) and the Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (49% stake)—includes two highly valuable, transparent, gem-quality white diamonds.

Gem-Quality Stones: Two pristine white diamonds weighing 0.19 carats and 0.06 carats.

Targeted Drilling: Executing approximately 500 meters of precision drilling to extract subsurface core samples without damaging potential crystals.

Bulk Sampling: Bulk Sampling was ever a challenging in this project due to presence of thick overburden layer. However, with a concerted efforts by United Explorations Geological and Mining Teams, this was successfully carried out to extract about 200 tons of Kimberlite Samples finally on which the existence of Diamond has been established.
